Ten Ways to Get the Most Out of the SKCHRA.

    By Deidra Nguyen, Membership Co-Chair

Whether you’re a longtime chapter member or new to SHRM, you may not know about all that the SKCHRA has to offer. Since I joined the board in 2012, we have been hard at work trying to make the SKCHRA the absolute best chapter it can be. Here are ten simple ways that you can make sure that you are getting the most out of the SKCHRA!

    1. Visit the Member Resource Center on

Are you an SKCHRA member who hasn’t yet made use of the members-only content available on our Member Resource Center? What are you waiting for?! To access the Member Resource Center, you simply need to register on Once you’re registered, you can access members-only content at any time. You probably already know that you can find copies of presentation materials for meetings and chapter events you may have missed. Did you know that you can also watch recordings of SKCHRA webinars and download best practices forms and worksheets, including a sample timecard certification?

    1. Join the SKCHRA Certification Study Program.

Whether you are an experienced HR professional maintaining your certification or new to the field and looking to become certified, the SKCHRA Certification Study Program is a great way to hone your HR knowledge. For those looking to become certified, the SKCHRA is full of resources, from discounted materials to interactive study group sessions. For those who are already certified, leading study group sessions is an excellent way to stay sharp and help your local HR community.

    1. Connect with us on LinkedIn.

The SKCHRA LinkedIn group is a great way to stay in touch with the SKCHRA between meetings. Our members are posting discussions, polls, jobs, and HR questions. Joining the SKCHRA LinkedIn group is easy, and membership is not limited to chapter members, so head over there and start connecting with your South King County HR peers!

    1. Purchase a Meal Deal Card.

SKCHRA members love the savings and convenience of Meal Deal Cards! Besides saving money and cutting down on pesky expense reports, Meal Deal Cards encourage and remind you to attend monthly chapter meetings.

    1. Attend an SKCHRA Event.

Perhaps the only thing better than an SKCHRA chapter meeting is an SKCHRA event. In 2012, the SKCHRA hosted a membership social at Emerald Downs that many of our members are still raving about. In the Fall of 2013, we had a half-day legal seminar on conducting investigations that garnered excellent reviews. No one puts on an event like the SKCHRA, so don’t miss the exciting events we have planned for 2014.

    1. Read the Monthly SKCHRA Newsletter.

In our most recent survey, chapter members told us that they enjoy reading the newsletter and would love to see even more local and customized content. We have responded by making the newsletter better than ever. You’ll now find more content generated by some of our most popular presenters and geared towards HR issues you care about.

    1. Attend an SKCHRA Webinar.

SKCHRA’s webinar series is perfect for busy HR professionals who like learning about hot topics in HR but find it difficult to get away from work. SKCHRA webinars deliver substantive HR content, and HRCI credit, straight to your desk. Webinars are always free for members, and if you happen to miss the live webinar, the recording is available in the Member Resource Center on

    1. Volunteer.

The SKCHRA is always looking for volunteers to help with chapter events and initiatives. Whether you can spare a few hours a year to help out at a single meeting or a few hours a month to serve on the board or a board committee, your chapter needs you! Take it from a board member, your SKCHRA experience will be much more fulfilling if you engage with the chapter and get involved.

    1. Provide Feedback.

Have you ever picked up an evaluation form at a chapter meeting and thought, “Does anyone ever read this stuff?” The answer is yes! The SKCHRA is here to serve YOU, and we need your help to make the SKCHRA the absolute best it can be. When you attend a monthly chapter meeting, complete the evaluation form. When you receive the annual SKCHRA survey, fill it out. If you have ideas for how to improve the chapter, share them with a board member! Our mission is complete member satisfaction, so please take every opportunity to tell us how we’re doing and how we can help you get the most out of the SKCRHA.

    1. Come a Little Early, or Stay a Little Late.

SKCHRA’s monthly chapter meetings offer more than just delicious food and awesome speakers. They’re also a great opportunity to network with your peers. The connections you’ll make at the SKCHRA may come in handy next time you’re in need of quality employment candidates, a new professional opportunity, a sample form or policy, or input about a sticky personnel issue.
